Earlier this week the Trump administration announced that it fired half of The Department of Education’s workforce. And Linda McMahon, the new Secretary of Education, publicly acknowledged that this is just the beginning — the "final mission" is to shut down the department altogether.
This is hardly the first attack on public education that we’ve fought against in recent years, but it is an alarming escalation. Neither the president nor the Secretary of Education can legally shut down the department unilaterally, that takes an act of Congress, but they can do so much damage to our students and teachers in the meantime.
So here’s what engaged parents (or anyone passionate about public ed) can do:
Help spread the word. Let everyone in your life know that kids with disabilities, kids with an IEP or individualized education program, kids who live in rural areas, and kids from lower-income families will be hit first. Is this who we want to be as a nation? Absolutely not. So we created an easy to use tool-kit with pre-loaded social media content you can share with your networks.
Do some research. Who’s on your local school board? What are their views on public education?
Find your people and organize. There are tens of thousands of school board races this year. Get together with your friends and neighbors to support candidates who will stand up for public education. We have TroubleNation groups in all 50 states that you can join. And if there isn’t a group close to you, you can start your own. Our TroubleNation program gives you all the tools you need to organize locally.
Remember… when they go low, we go local.
And as you’re sharing this information with your networks, remember to share this post too! We need everyone we know to be fighting to protect public education.
