This week Senator Corey Booker and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries held a 12 hour sit-in on the steps of the Capitol to protest the GOP budget, which aims to cut Medicaid and other services that many Americans depend on, in order to provide a large tax cut for the richest Americans.
People shared stories of how important Medicaid has been to their family. Senator Booker and Congressman Jeffries asked whether we were on the side of billionaires or if we were going to fight for the American people.
Senator Booker then encouraged Americans to be creative and find new ways to stand up and speak out. He reminded us that,
“Every time our country came to a moral crossroads, it was the soul of America, it was the conscience of the people, the action and the activism, …every time it was the power of the people. In a moral moment, people stood up. In a moral moment, people spoke up. In a moral moment, people rose up. And said this my country. It is we the people. We’re gonna stand up.”
Let’s keep standing up and speaking out for our rights and our country. This is a moral moment for our country. And we have what it takes to meet the moment and stand up.
