We’ve talked about the SAVE Act before. A version of this horrible voter suppression bill failed to pass last year, but now MAGA’s brought it back. And it’s worse!
The new version of the SAVE Act would require everyone to show a passport or an original birth certificate to register to vote. 21 million American citizens don’t have ready access to these documents! It would also require every state to institute a Voter ID law.
Now that the House of Representatives has passed this awful bill, only the Senate stands in the way. MAGA is demanding that the Senate change filibuster rules in order to pass it and now President Trump himself has made it a top priority.
It looks unlikely to pass, but with Trump personally pushing it, who knows what might happen? It’s crucial that we reach out to our Senators — whether they’re Democrats or Republicans — and let them know that the majority of Americans do not support the SAVE Act. A vote is expected as early as next week.
We know it’s not about “election security.” It’s about suppressing votes. And we can’t let them get away with it.
