I usually offer the disclaimer that “I’m prejudiced” when it comes to public schools, because I have worked, in at least some capacity, in public schools for roughly 52 of my 74 years on earth. But I will never apologize for that prejudice, and in fact I’m proud of it.
I could go on and on (and I’m happy to do so) about what strong public schools bring to this nation by empowering individuals & communities to continually grow & improve. I’m talking here, btw, about TRULY PUBLIC schools, as in HIGH QUALITY schools that are FREE, ACCESSIBLE TO ALL, & ADEQUATELY FUNDED. And as your excellent video makes very clear, that’s where the Dept. of Education comes in.
President Carter (God bless him!) had firsthand knowledge of how inaccessible and inadequately funded public schools could be for some students if individual states were left to their own devices. So, he helped bring about the creation of the Dept. of Ed. to help support, encourage, and monitor states in their efforts (or lack thereof) to educate ALL students regardless of their conditions or challenges.
Given how far too many states today are willing to underfund genuinely PUBLIC schools through voucher programs and for-profit charter school endeavors, we need a robust Dept. of Education as much as we ever did.
Honestly, I believe Trump is stepping into a minefield with this grotesquely ignorant effort to “send education back to the states.” If they are successful in shutting down DOE, he and Linda will find out soon enough just what “IDEA” stands for when special education classes are eliminated and Title 1 teachers aren’t available to teach reading to hundreds of thousands of children. The proverbial s**t will hit the fan, and I hope both of them get it right in the face.
Another excellent video!
I’m eagerly re-stacking!!
