This week on the pod, we talked to Nikki and Sarah, two moms who were arrested last November while protesting at an ICE facility in Chicago.
They hoped that a story of white suburban moms would make bigger news than the many people of color who have been detained, arrested, or killed by ICE. And although their protest went as expected — they were treated with relative kindness by the officers and released from jail within the day — we saw last week that simply being a white mom was not enough to save Renee Good’s life.
If you’re inspired by Nikki and Sarah, or the many Minnesotans standing up against ICE right now, you can certainly go out and protest and even get arrested. (Please be careful - we have scripts and tips for safely engaging on our website.)
But if that’s too intense, there are so many other ways to help. You can go to a meeting, visit a website, read a book, prepare food for your neighbors who are out protesting, send money to organizations that align with your values, or even just talk to the people in your life about what’s going on.
As Sarah says, we need all the things right now. Let’s all find one more thing we can do.
