Red Wine & Blue members have been pushing for justice in the final unresolved election of 2024: a state Supreme Court race in North Carolina between progressive judge Allison Riggs and MAGA judge Jefferson Griffin. And this week, a US District Judge (a Trump appointee no less!) finally ruled in Justice Riggs’ favor.
It was a close race to be sure. On election day, Riggs emerged narrowly ahead of Griffin; recounts showed Riggs leading by 734 votes out of 5.5 million ballots cast. Griffin quickly filed hundreds of legal challenges, backed by the North Carolina Republican Party, claiming that more than 68,000 people had voted “illegally.” He wanted to throw out tens of thousands of North Carolinians’ votes, including active military members who were stationed overseas.
With this week’s ruling, the page has finally turned on this contentious election. But that money, time, and effort could’ve been poured into so many other things that would’ve actually improved North Carolinians’ lives.
"After millions of dollars spent, more than 68,000 voters at risk of losing their votes, thousands of volunteers mobilized, hundreds of legal documents filed, and immeasurable damage done to our democracy, I’m glad the will of the voters was finally heard, six months and two days after Election Day." (Justice Allison Riggs)
We’re glad that Griffin’s efforts to subvert democracy were unsuccessful, but this won’t be the last time that extremists try to take away our vote. It’s frustrating and exhausting. But we rallied our squads to fight this battle and we’re ready to fight all the battles to come.
