Finally something to celebrate!

Two wins for public education

Yes, Trump’s “big beautiful bill” has passed the House and is now in the hands of the Senate. We’ll have plenty to say about that as it progresses — for example, it introduces a new private school voucher program called ECCA (Educational Choice for Children Act) that would be terrible for public education and put more money in the hands of billionaires.

But we can’t forget to celebrate the victories, too. They keep us going and remind us that change is possible and our efforts do matter, even in this administration.

First, a federal judge just blocked Trump’s plan to shut down the Department of Education. (Check out our short video about the Dept of Ed here if you missed it!) The department is back in business for now, and the laid-off staff will be reinstated.

Second, the Supreme Court deadlocked 4 to 4 on a case about charter schools, effectively blocking Oklahoma from creating the first taxpayer-funded religious school. This is a win not just for public education, but for the separation of church and state that’s so fundamental to our country.

Of course, this isn’t the end of Trump’s attacks on public education. But most parents support public schools, and if we keep using our voices, we’ll have more wins to celebrate in the future, too.
