If Grandmas Can Do It, So Can You
Four nanas in California are rallying their community
SLV Voices for Democracy began the way so many Red Wine & Blue Network groups do: at the kitchen table.
Four grandmothers came together over their shared anger and fear about the country’s direction, simply to vent and support one another. But over time, as they started inviting more friends and community members, the group grew into a powerhouse in their small California town.
SLV Voices for Democracy started hosting biweekly actions that include a food drive for their local food bank and a voter registration table. Their goal has always been to make their California mountain community more aware of, involved in, and informed about local, state, and federal issues affecting their valley.
The group’s dedication has made them a fixture in their community. Their first event had roughly 5 people, but their numbers quickly grew, with their largest rally drawing over 400 participants.
They have even connected with several other nearby mountain groups and have collaborated to host rallies and amplify one another’s actions, showcasing the power of coming together over shared values and goals.
SLV Voices for Democracy is just one of hundreds of Red Wine & Blue Network groups across the country. If you’re interested in finding a Network group in your community or starting a new group, check out our Red Wine & Blue Network page!
