We’ve known that Trump wanted to shut down the Department of Education for a while now. But yesterday afternoon, he signed a new executive order to make it official.
Only Congress can close a department or cut funding, but Trump has been openly defying the judicial system and our democratic norms since his second inauguration this year. So parents of public school students — and anyone else who cares about education — should be very concerned.
If you have questions about what The Department of Education does and why we need it, we released an episode of “Okay, But Why” just this week about that very thing. If you missed it, you can watch it here. There’s a lot of misinformation out there about public education, so it’s important to equip yourself with the facts.
Then, make sure you talk to your friends, family, neighbors, and fellow parents in the school drop-off line. Reach out to your elected representatives. Tell them why public schools are so important for your family and for kids across the country. And reach out to your community on social media. We’ve created a social media toolkit with easy to use graphics and videos that you can share with everyone in your networks. Or you can share this post to spread the word.
If you’re ready to take the next step, we’re also hosting a virtual event on April 3 at 6pm ET with Sharon McMahon to discuss the importance of the Department of Education and how we can save public education. You can sign up for the event here.
Let’s make sure we are all taking action to protect public education. Together, we can make a difference.
