The SAVE Act is voter suppression, plain and simple. It would make it harder for millions of Americans to register to vote by requiring physical proof of citizenship—like a birth certificate or passport—every time someone registers or updates their voter registration.
How many people out there have easy access to their birth certificate? Not to mention the millions of Americans whose legal name has changed since birth! That affects trans people, legal immigrants, foster youth, military members serving overseas, and any married woman who changed her last name.
But a brave woman at a town hall in Georgia demanded answers from her representative and one of the sponsors of the bill: Congressman Rich McCormick (R). And less than 24 hours after we posted this video, we heard from her! Her name is Emily and she isn’t someone who normally speaks at town halls. But she knew she had to do something, so she stepped up when the opportunity arose.
As inspirational as this video clip is, any of us can do what Emily did. If there aren’t any town hall events coming up in your district, call your members of Congress to let them know you don’t support this bill.
You can also learn more about the SAVE Act at Red Wine & Blue’s virtual event coming up on Monday 3/3. We’ll be joined by Emily along with Katie Paris and some voting rights experts. We hope to see you there!
