You may have heard that RFK Jr. is going after the abortion pill — a medication that’s been safe and FDA-approved for 25 years. But you may not know the whole story.
In April, a right-wing think tank that’s on the Project 2025 Advisory Board published a report claiming mifepristone, also known as the abortion pill, isn't safe. But that report wasn’t peer-reviewed or published in a medical journal, and doctors have been pointing out issues with it ever since.
For example, the study lists ectopic pregnancy as a dangerous side effect of mifepristone. But that’s a type of pregnancy (a very dangerous one at that), not an result of medication. As Jennifer Lincoln, an OB-GYN in Oregon, said, “Pills can't move your pregnancy out of your uterus and into your fallopian tubes.” You’d think that would be obvious, but apparently not.
So here are some true things about mifepristone.
It’s the most commonly used abortion method in the country, used in two-thirds of abortions.
It’s only used to end pregnancies at 10 weeks or less.
More than 100 scientific studies have found that it’s safe and effective.
Missouri Senator Josh Hawley, who has also voted against IVF and birth control, is leading the charge.
Extremists are calling this push “Operation Rolling Thunder,” named after a bombing campaign from the Vietnam War. That alone should tell you something about their mindset: using misinformation as a weapon. All of this is a tactic to scare people and force the FDA into restricting or banning the medication.
“Anti-abortion advocates will stop at nothing to put mifepristone – a safe, effective FDA-approved medication that has been used for 25 years – back under lock and key.” (Kirsten Moore, director of the Expanding Medication Abortion Access Project)
So talk to your friends and family about what’s happening and call out the lies for what they are. This isn’t just about one medication. It’s about control.
When in hell is there going to be a mass class action suit against the federal government and all the makers of Viagra and all its current generic manufacturers on behalf of every female American between the ages of 12 and 45.
Men on Viagra are just interested in serving their own sexual needs and are harming women in the process.
