Over 400,000 Transgender Americans Have Fled Their States Since Trump's Re-Election
Anti-trans policies spark one of the largest relocations in U.S. history
A new poll from the Movement Advancement Project and NORC estimates that around 400,000 transgender people have left their home states for safer ones since the 2024 election, moving specifically in response to anti-trans laws and policies.
This marks one of the largest relocations in modern U.S. history.
The reason is clear: since the start of President Trump’s second term, anti-LGBTQ rhetoric has surged, violence has intensified, and a wave of legislation, executive orders, and targeted policies has reshaped the lives of LGBTQ people—especially transgender individuals.
56% of respondents said they’ve faced discrimination because of their gender identity, and 47% reported in-person harassment.
In many instances, the attacks come directly from the state, as 24% of those surveyed reported experiencing discrimination or mistreatment by their local or state government.
