The chaos of the Trump administration continues and with breaking news happening every hour, it’s been hard to keep up on on the news. So here are three news stories you need to know about this week.
Texas Banned Abortion. Then Sepsis Rates Soared.
The SWP Take: After Texas banned abortions in 2021, sepsis cases for women hospitalized for second-trimester miscarriages have increased by over 50%. The study notes that the reported sepsis rates are probably underestimated since they don’t count women who were denied emergency room care. In addition, between 2019 and 2023 the maternal death rate in Texas increased by 33%. Women being denied life-saving healthcare is one of the many problems with abortion bans. There is nothing pro-life about letting women die.
Latest Trump guidance on race has schools scrambling amid ‘intense fear’
The SWP Take: The Trump administration is threatening to deny public schools and universities federal funding if they consider race in any way, for any reason. But federal law dictates that schools that discriminate on the basis of race are not eligible for federal funding. These executive orders will work their way through the court system, but in the meantime our schools are left spending valuable time and resources trying to figure out how to handle these new dictates.
Missouri bill proposes registry for pregnant women to ‘reduce preventable abortions’
The SWP Take: Missouri state legislators want to create a list of “at risk” pregnant women, defining that as every expecting mother in the state “who is at risk for seeking an abortion.” The state has not defined how it would determine who is at risk. It is absolutely no okay for a state government to be tracking pregnant women in the state. And don’t forget that Missouri voters passed a ballot measure in 2024 to add the right to abortion to their state constitution.
Thank you for your words of wisdom....tracking pregnant woman is an infringement on their privacy...and basically any lose during a pregnancy (abortion, miscarriage, etc) is grounds to deny a woman decent health care...like my dad always said about men who try to control/ rape women..." they should nail his nuts to a tree stump and push him over backwards". The man who thinks he is king is an "Ahole" he hates any one who was not made in his image....big fat cheeto!!!! I love your column!!!
