It’s been another week of chaos from the Trump administration and it can be hard to keep up on the news. So here are three news stories you need to know about this week.
‘Nobody fights harder than a mom’: Congresswoman brings newborn to D.C. to cast key vote
The SWP Take: As an organization of women, we know a thing or two about mom power. So we were all inspired last week when Congresswoman Brittany Petterson of Colorado flew to D.C. with her newborn son to vote on funding for healthcare and food assistance programs. Congresswoman Petterson’s story highlights a problem familiar to many families. In a country that doesn’t guarantee any time off for childbirth, too often women are forced to return to work very quickly after giving birth. We need to prioritize family leave, and that starts with our own Congress.
‘DEI needs to go’: Education Department launches ‘End DEI’ website
The SWP Take: This is another attack on our public education system, which benefits from diversity, equity and inclusion programs. Extremist groups like Moms for Liberty have been pushing to end these programs for years, and now with Project 2025 and the Trump administration, they are getting what they’ve always wanted. But we know that all children benefit from DEI programs. We are going to keep celebrating these programs where they do exist, and fighting for a future where all public schools are diverse, equitable and inclusive for all children.
She hoped Trump’s victory would change her life, but not like this
The SWP Take: Ryleigh Cooper believed Trump when he said that he would make IVF free if elected president. And like so many Americans she believed him. She also believed him when he denied any connection to Project 2025. Unfortunately Ryleigh is now seeing the very real consequences of the federal layoffs previewed in Project 2025, as her own job as a forest ranger is at risk of being cut. Ryleigh’s story highlights how everyone in America, whether they voted for or against Trump, will be impacted by the cutting of the federal government.
One last piece of news, have you heard about the SAVE Act? It’s a voter suppression bill sponsored by the GOP that would make it harder for millions of Americans to register to vote or change their registration (like what you do after you move). The bill would require proof of citizenship with passport or birth certificate that matches the name you are registering under. That means if you changed your name due to marriage, adoption, or an identity change you would not be able to use your birth certificate to register. It also requires people to register in person, making voter registration more complicated, expensive and eliminating voter registration drives. This bill would create new barriers to voting. We have to fight back. Join us tonight as we explain everything you need to know about the SAVE Act and give you the tools to fight back and protect our right to vote.
