It’s been another week of non-stop news, but we are here to break it down and highlight some of the stories you might have missed.
ALA statement on White House assault on the Institute of Museum and Library Services
The RWB Take: Friday evening Trump issued an executive order eliminating the Institute of Museum and Library Services. This agency is the only federal agency for America’s libraries, and employs only 75 people, yet it provides service for millions of Americans every day. These cuts won’t make a significant impact on our federal budget, but they will be felt by Americans across the country as libraries are impacted. This is not a financial decision, but a direct attack on libraries. You can read more about the cuts here: Trump cuts funding for federal agencies with executive order
Louisiana woman pleads not guilty to a felony in historic abortion case
The RWB Take: A mother in Louisiana was indicted for the felony of criminal abortion by means of abortion-inducing drugs. The woman obtained the drugs from a doctor in New York for her teenage daughter. Dr. Margaret Carpenter is also charged with the same felony for providing the medication, however New York shield law protects her, and New York Governor Kathy Hochul has vowed to ignore the extradition. It is not okay that a mother is under criminal indictment for providing her daughter with safe and effective medication to terminate a pregnancy.
Arlington Cemetery website scrubs links about Black and female veterans
The RWB Take: Under orders from the Pentagon, Arlington Cemetery is removing webpages that list the graves of Black, Hispanic and female veterans. These orders require the removal of all news and feature articles, photos and videos that “promote” DEI. This is part of a systematic attempt by the Trump administration to erase American history, specifically the history of anyone who is not a white man.
It is has been so clear for so long that he views the world through a bigoted, sexist and misogynistic lens. All of the civil rights gains of my lifetime, at 71, are at risk of being undone; of course, some already have been. But I am heartened and encouraged by the number of people ... and so many women! ... stepping up in affinity groups (i.e., RWB, Indivisible, 50501) to say Hell, No!! The damage won't be repaired during my remaining time, but I will opposing him and his enablers every day until I can't. I love RWB!! You ladies are so very awesome and I'm always glad to spread at the word about you!
By the time the Cheeto and Melon Husk are done, Americ will no longer exist...it will be a waste land or an extension of Russia. They need to be gone...representatives from my state, who could maybe try to make a difference, are sending out form letters that say "blah blah blah" they are just sympathetic to him and that makes me so mad. Excuses for why he is doing the things he's doing...there is no excuse, if it's not broken don't fix it...it worked pretty good for all the other presidents...he is so full of shit, he can't see straight!!!
