Millions of Women at Risk as a New Wave of Abortion Bans Spread Nationwide
From Ohio to Texas, reproductive care restrictions surge with little public attention
Across the country, Republican politicians are pushing harder than ever to control women’s reproductive health — and many of us aren’t even aware it’s happening.
But we’re here to tell you everything you need to know.
The North Dakota Supreme Court has lifted a lower court’s pause on the state’s abortion ban, effectively reinstating it. North Dakota is now the 13th state to ban most or all abortions.
The law allows the procedure only if a doctor determines the mother’s life is at serious risk, or in cases of rape or incest, but only before six weeks of pregnancy. The policy puts women and healthcare providers in a dangerous position because its rules around life-saving care are unclear, and most women don’t even know they’re pregnant before six weeks.
The Attorneys General of Missouri, Kansas, and Idaho are stepping up efforts to restrict abortion medication in their states. They filed an updated complaint in the ongoing case Missouri v. FDA, where anti-abortion groups are using false information to challenge access to Mifepristone across the country.
Now, the states are asking the court to undo the FDA’s recent approval of a new generic version of the drug.
This comes as Texas rolls out a restrictive new law aimed at stopping doctors from sending abortion medication into the state, Michigan’s Republican Congressional delegation pressures the FDA to undo a 2023 policy allowing abortion medication by mail, and the Ohio House passes a bill that would ban telehealth abortions.
We all deserve the right to decide if, when, and how we start or grow our families. It’s our business, not the government’s.
But our freedom to make these choices is under attack, and the best way to fight for our rights is to understand what is going on, inform our friends and family, and take action in our local communities.
