Every week since the inauguration has been overwhelming, but this week we actually have a chance to make our voices heard — in Wisconsin, Florida, and Congress.
If you live in Wisconsin or Florida, make sure you vote today! Florida is holding two special elections, to replace Congressmen Matt Gaetz and Mike Waltz. Both are solidly Republican districts, but Democratic enthusiasm and fundraising has been strong. The GOP currently has a razor-thin majority in the House (218 seats, the minimum required to win a vote) so this is a chance to send a message to Trump that we’re paying attention and we are not happy. An upset is certainly possible - it just happened in a special election in Pennsylvania!
And in Wisconsin, a State Supreme Court election could have big consequences too. The position is technically nonpartisan, but Elon Musk has poured millions of dollars into supporting an extremist candidate who has welcomed Trump’s endorsement. The outcome of this election could determine how redistricting laws play out in this key battleground state. In the words of the Democratic-backed candidate Susan Crawford:
"It's about making sure that we have a Supreme Court that is fair and impartial in interpreting our laws to protect the rights of Wisconsinites. The other choice is an extreme partisan, someone who is selling out to special interests and has now tied himself to Elon Musk."
And lastly, it looks like the SAVE Act is finally coming to a vote in Congress. We’ve covered the SAVE Act before (like in this episode of “Okay, But Why”) because it could take away millions of Americans’ right to vote, including women who changed their last name when they got married. The House is scheduled to vote on the SAVE Act on Thursday, so you have two days to call your representatives and let them know you’re against these extreme restrictions on our voting rights.
This week is a big opportunity to push back on MAGA and their Project 2025 playbook. Let’s make the most of it!
Excellent slogan. When they go low, we go local. Yes! Let’s go!
