Governor Ron DeSantis announced a ‘2nd Amendment Tax Holiday,' during which guns and ammunition will be tax-free from September 8 to December 31, 2025. Yup, you heard that correctly.
It doesn’t come as a surprise, though. This initiative is part of a larger state effort to erode firearm access restrictions, under the influence of the Republican-led legislature. In March, the Florida House approved HB 759, lowering the rifle and shotgun purchase age from 21 to 18, championed by Representative Michelle Salzman.
This controversial move partially reversed a law enacted after the 2018 school shooting in Parkland, Florida that killed 17 people. In addition, the special license requirement for concealed carry had been removed.
According to the Gun Violence Archive, in 2025, the U.S. has already seen 8,600 deaths, 15,718 injuries, and 253 mass shootings from gun violence. We need stronger gun safety laws – not cheaper guns and ammo.
Wonder how much compensation this "tax holiday" will generate for the governor from the gun lobby. For him and the Republican-led legislature in Florida, in the company of other GOP lawmakers at the federal level across the country who block gun violence prevention legislation that can save lives.
OMG what on earth are we doing? WHY ??
THIS is what Florida thinks is important right now??
