Did you know that there’s a county in North Carolina called Transylvania? Unlike the region in Romania that shares its name — most commonly known as the home of the legendary (if fictional) Count Dracula — the scariest thing in Transylvania County doesn’t go bump in the night. It’s underfunded public schools.
This month, a TroubleNation group called Good Trouble Transylvania launched an initiative called Stock The Classroom to help support their local teachers. Members of the group wanted to help offset the rising costs of the classroom supplies and books that teachers are often forced to purchase out of their own pockets. Several local businesses have already signed up to “adopt” classrooms.
“Teachers should be able to focus on students, not on whether they can afford basic supplies for their classrooms,” said Debbie Lanier, a member of Good Trouble Transylvania. “By adopting a classroom, our community can show educators that we value their work and are committed to giving them the tools they need to succeed.”
“Education is the cornerstone of a strong community,” added local parent and GTT member Andrea Townson. “When we support our teachers, we’re investing in the future of our children and the health of the entire county. Now more than ever, our schools need all the help they can get.”
Keep up the great work, Good Trouble Transylvania! You can find a group in your area by visiting our TroubleNation page.
