Families Shouldn't Go Hungry Because GOP Politicians Won't Do Their Jobs
Millions of Americans are at risk of losing access to grocery funds on November 1st
Amid the government shutdown, the US Department of Agriculture told states there is not enough money to pay food stamp benefits in November.
That means that roughly 42 million people who receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits and the 7 million who receive aid from the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) will lose food assistance on Nov. 1 if the GOP-led government shutdown continues.
Families who typically rely on SNAP benefits will need to utilize food banks and other meal programs during the funding lapse.
To find a local food bank, enter your zip code on Feeding America’s website.
To check your benefits, contact your state or local SNAP office.
However, food banks were already operating under federal funding cuts under the ‘Big Beautiful Bill,’ and the pause in benefits would kick in just before the Thanksgiving holiday, adding further strain on food banks during one of their busiest seasons.
What You Can Do
The most effective way to support food banks is to donate money, as they can purchase food in bulk for less than the retail price.
Additional ways to help include volunteering your time and donating high-need, shelf-stable food items, such as:
Peanut butter
Canned soup
Canned fruit
Canned vegetables
Canned beans
Pasta
Rice
Formula
Baby food
