Why won’t anyone raise the big question:

Why do these companies feel they need to store exponentially greater amounts of data? Why are these so sure it will pay off?

They are collecting massive data with, i suspect, Orwellian intent. Just what is both unclear and a threat to our freedoms.

I suspect they are creating their own “governmental” structure while creating a single source of all the information “given” to them on each of us.

Yes, electrical power is a large concern as is the bigger issue of water consumption. However, the use to which these centers are tasked with is a far, far bigger issue and I don’t see anyone addressing it.

It’s beginning I think.

Starting with how on an earth some officials who are tasked to approve of these gigantic centers for their communities/constituents are purportedly required to sign NDAs.

Something not only smells, it stinks.

Unfortunately, as long as the orange monster is still in charge along with his Republican enablers, we will not be able to do anything nationally. But, do not fret! Bright red communities are fighting back one at a time. Think global; act local. Today is primary election day in quite a few states including mine. Get out and vote! The candidates you vote for today will be the ones on the ballot in November. And do NOT forget; VOTE on election day. Democracy is not a spectator sport. The Red Wine & Blue community already know this!

My issue with these data centres is what will happen when they develop technology that makes them obsolete.

Where is Asimov's "positronic brain"? I suspect it is coming.

A bit like sequencing the genome. This was predicted to take the entire worlds computing power the life of the universe to work out. Now it is done for cents and done very quickly.

Never underestimate clever people.

Meantime who decided we need AI. I have used it and it is clever but is it necessary.

There is some misdirection going on with AI the excuse for more and more power tracking our social media. I believe data centres currently use only 20-30% for AI - most is for tracking "likes".

I am also a bit weary of the claims about water consumption. True water cooling is easy and cheap, but it can be done with no water. Refrigerative cooling (to air cooled heat exchangers) is more expensive, not necessarily more energy intensive.

Pushing for the best technologies should be one of the arguments.
