Two days ago, Wisconsin held a special election for their state Supreme Court. It was technically a nonpartisan election but one judge, Susan Crawford, stood for reproductive freedom and fair elections whereas the other, Brad Schimel, was supported by Elon Musk to the tune of millions of dollars. As Tuesday approached, we all held our breath in anticipation of the results.
Wait, that’s not true — we were all using our breath to talk to everyone we knew about the race!
And it paid off. Crawford won the election by double digits, receiving 55% of the vote to Schimel’s 45%. As a reminder, this is a state that went for Trump in 2024 (although by the thinnest margin nationwide, 0.86%). This victory is huge for reproductive rights in Wisconsin as well as voting rights. With a 5-4 liberal majority, extremists in the state will find it much harder to push through new gerrymandered maps.
That last point was likely why Elon Musk was so interested in the outcome of a little state Supreme Court race in Wisconsin. He actually said the results would determine the trajectory of “the Western World,” a statement he’s walked back since the results were announced. But we agree with him on one thing - these results are important! They send a strong message that the purplest state in the nation has rejected Elon Musk’s money and the Project 2025 playbook.
But Judge Crawford’s election wasn’t the only good news from Tuesday. Wisconsin delivered another great win, this time for public schools. Public ed advocate Jill Underly won re-election as State Superintendent over a GOP-backed candidate who was pushing for more charter and private schools. And Moms for Liberty backed candidates lost school board races across the state.
Then there was more good news from Florida. While both Republican candidates did win their special Congressional elections, it was by a much smaller margin than last November. These are deep red districts that voted for Trump by 30%, but this Tuesday the MAGA candidates only won by 15%.
Across the country, Americans are making their feelings about Trump and Musk known. Let’s keep this momentum—and these conversations—going!
