Civics Lessons, MAGA Edition
The Trump Administration is now working with Moms for Liberty, Turning Point USA, and the Heritage Foundation
The U.S. Department of Education has announced the America 250 Civics Education Coalition, a partnership with more than 40 conservative organizations to develop civics programming ahead of the nation’s 250th anniversary.
The coalition will be led by the America First Policy Institute and includes groups such as Turning Point USA, Moms for Liberty, the Heritage Foundation, and Hillsdale College.
The Department of Education presented this initiative as a way to “revitalize patriotism” and foster "a shared understanding of America's founding principles in schools across the nation." But the Trump administration has shown time and time again that their version of history isn’t always an accurate one.
From ordering National Parks to remove signs and exhibits related to slavery, to asking visitors to report historical information that it considers “negative” about Americans, and pressuring the Smithsonian to remove materials mentioning race and slavery, the administration and its allies have promoted a narrative of American history that purposely ignores the nation’s flaws.
This coalition is the latest step in that effort, signaling a push to reshape civics education around a sanitized version of history that serves a political agenda rather than the truth, making it all the more important for us to speak out, stay engaged, and demand that our schools teach the full, honest story of America.
