This year in Homer, Alaska, a mom named Ash-Lee decided to run for school board. She had never run for any office before, but she was determined to help the students and teachers in her district.
Then Moms for Liberty got involved. They funded a conservative candidate who signed up to run against Ash-Lee just before the deadline passed. Ash-Lee wasn’t about to drop out, but she did begin to lose hope. She had never been involved in politics before; how could she compete with the machine that is Moms for Liberty?
That’s when a TroubleNation group called Homer Women of Action stepped in. They started making signs, writing letters, sending postcards, and talking to their neighbors. With their support, Ash-Lee grew in confidence and stepped into her own power as a candidate.
And when election day rolled around on October 7th, she beat the Moms for Liberty candidate by a landslide!
Local elections matter. Students in Homer now have an advocate on their school board instead of someone who wants to ban books and rainbow flags. In Ash-Lee’s own words,
“For me, the question that must guide every decision is simple: how does this affect the actual humans at the center of our schools - our students, families, and educators? I want to serve on the board because I believe change begins with how we choose to see and treat one another. To me, that is what leadership in education means - changing the game by remembering the human beings in front of us every day.”
This school board race from just a few weeks ago shines a light on what a few troublemakers can do when they band together and work hard. We can elect candidates like Ash-Lee across the country next Tuesday if we step up like Homer Women of Action.
If we can do it in Alaska, we can do it anywhere.

Thanks for this. Great story that echoes Kamala Harris’s line: when we fight, we win!
Well done, Homer Alaska!
